Question list
Questions to ask on a first date without turning it into an interview
Here are questions to ask on a first date when you want the conversation to move, but you don't want to sit there firing prompts like a hiring manager.
They're easy to answer, mostly safe for a coffee or a drink, and built to leave room for stories. Skip anything that feels too soon. A good question is only good if the other person actually wants to answer it.
Use one, listen properly, then ask the follow-up that fits. The best bit is usually not the first answer.
Play it live instead of reading it out
The 36 Questions is the live version: one of you makes a room, the other joins with a four-letter code, and you play it together on two screens. Free, no sign-up.

Getting the most out of them
Ask one question, then stop
Give them space to answer properly. If you already know your next question before they finish speaking, you're not really listening.
Answer your own question too
A first date shouldn't make one person perform while the other evaluates. If you ask something personal, be ready to go first or answer after them.
Keep the early ones light
Avoid exes, salary, and anything that sounds like you're checking boxes. You can learn plenty from how someone talks about food, time, friends, habits, and small choices.
Move braver only when the room allows it
If the date is still careful, stay with easy questions. If you're both leaning in and giving real answers, try one of the deeper ones.
Questions about this list
How many questions should I ask on a first date?
Fewer than you think. Two or three good questions, with proper follow-ups, can carry a whole date. If it starts to feel like a list, stop asking and just talk.
What are good first date questions that don't feel awkward?
Ask about things they can answer without rehearsing: how they spend a free day, what they notice first in a place, what they are oddly good at, or what they care about more than they used to. Specific questions usually feel less awkward than big ones.
What should I avoid asking on a first date?
Don't start with exes, salary, past trauma, or anything that makes the other person explain their whole life before the second drink. Also avoid questions that are secretly tests, like trying to find out if they meet a private checklist.
Can I use these questions before meeting in person?
Yes, but keep it lighter over text. A good message question should be easy to answer in a few lines. Save the ones that need tone, pauses, or eye contact for the actual date.
What if the other person gives very short answers?
Try one gentle follow-up, then move on. Short answers can mean nerves, disinterest, or just that the question didn't land. Don't keep pushing the same door.
