For two people in two places

Something to do on the call, other than the call

The hard part of being apart usually isn't the big stuff. It's the ordinary Tuesday where you're both on video, both a bit tired, and the conversation has run out twenty minutes before either of you wants to hang up.

Everything here is built for exactly two people on two screens. Nothing needs installing, there's no account, and one of you sends the other a four-letter code. Some of it is silly, some of it will get you somewhere you wouldn't have reached by talking.

Make a room

What to play, in order

  1. 01

    Escape Room

    18–22 min

The best one to do on a call, because it forces you to talk continuously. One of you sees the room and the other holds the manual, so you physically cannot progress without describing things to each other. It ends in a win you got together rather than one of you beating the other.

  2. 02

For a night where you've got time. Three escalating sets of twelve questions, based on the psychology experiment that reliably makes two people feel closer. It takes about forty-five minutes and it is not small talk.

  3. 03

You predict their answer, they answer honestly, and you compare. The ones you get wrong are the interesting ones — this is how you find out something's changed since you last asked.

  4. 04

Three minutes. Good for a call that's about to end but neither of you wants to hang up yet.

  5. 05

When you want to laugh rather than feel anything. Reliably ridiculous over video.

Making it work

Stay on the call while you play

Most of these are conversation games with a scoreboard attached. Playing them in silence with the chat box open is the worst version of all of them.

Start light, then go deeper

Same Page or the pair quiz first, then the escape room, then the 36 Questions if it's that sort of evening. Opening with the deep one rarely works.

Make it a standing thing

The room keeps a running recap of everything you've played in the session, so it works as a Sunday-night ritual rather than a one-off.

Questions

Do we both need an account?

No. Neither of you does. One person makes a room, sends the code or link, and that's it.

Does it work across time zones?

Yes — the games are live, so you do need to be online at the same time, but there's nothing to schedule or install.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. Everything is designed for a phone screen as well as a laptop, so you can play on your phone while they're on a laptop.

What if one of us drops off the wifi?

You'll go back into the same seat in the same game when you reconnect. Nothing is lost.

Ready?

Make a room, send the four-letter code to one other person. No account, nothing to install, works on a phone.
